The WRO® (World Robot OlympiadTM ) is a robotics competition for children and young people. Teamwork, problem solving and IT skills are used – along with thrills and lots of fun! The participants, aged between 6 and 22, work together as a team of 2 to 3 people and are supported by a coach.

There are four different categories that require and train different skills:.

  • In RoboMission, the classic category, a robot solves tasks on a game field (ages 8-18).
  • At Future Innovators the prototype for a robot is developed that is supposed to solve a real-world problem (ages 8-19).
  • With Future Engineers a self-driving car is developed that can also drive properly on an unknown course (14-22 years).
  • At WRO Starters the youngest inventors get a chance to learn the basics of robotics in a workshop (6-10 years).

Over 70,000 children and young people from 95 countries around the world take part in the WRO, giving them the opportunity to improve their problem-solving skills and understanding of technology through this challenging robotics competition – all while having a lot of fun!

The first WRO competition was held in Singapore in 2004; the WRO has also been represented in Switzerland since 2014. The sponsor is the association World Robot Olympiad Switzerland (wro.swiss), which is a member of the umbrella organization of the Swiss Science Olympiads.
